Pee Wee has been an ongoing program of the Madrone Audubon Society for over twelve years. It offers kids and their parents guided, hands-on, educational experiences in nature. Each program is led by a volunteer naturalist or teacher who is skilled in communicating the excitement of learning about nature and science. Best of all, each program is open to the public and is free of charge!
Pee Wee events are held monthly, from September through June. Most events are held on a weekend day, and they typically last from 3 to 4 hours. Past events have included: · A trip to Hawk Hill at the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, to watch and learn about birds of prey as they make their spectacular fall migration. · A wonderful program all about Bats, led by an expert from the Bat Conservation Fund. Kids participate in hands-on activities that help them to learn about these amazing creatures, and they even get a rare glimpse of live bats! · Stargazing at Ferguson Observatory, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. A docent from the observatory teaches kids all about the stars and planets, followed by an opportunity for everyone to look through the observatory's telescopes. · A trip to Audubon Canyon Ranch, where kids get a great look at a heron and egret rookery, or nursery. Hundreds of egret parents nest and tend their young in the majestic redwood trees at ACR. After watching and learning about egrets and herons, kids love to search for red-bellied newts in the sanctuary's ponds.
