Bird Walk Reports
Point Reyes, Thursday, September 16
On a gray day that never cleared at Point Reyes, Lew Edmondson and 15 other
birders found 61 species at the Earthquake Trail, Olema Marsh, Drake's Beach,
and the lighthouse. Highlights included an American Redstart, Chestnut-sided
Warbler, Townsend's Warblers, Philadelphia Vireo (at Drake's monument),
Western Wood Peewee, and a Black-throated Gray Warbler. At the lighthouse,
two male Townsend's Warblers used a puddle in the asphalt driveway to drink
and bathe within 10 feet of the group.
As usual, a Great Horned Owl was perched in the Cypress tree above Drake's
monument. Unexpectedly, it was joined by a Barn Owl, with three other Barn
Owls (possibly a family) in the trees behind the Visitor's Center.
Rio Lindo Academy, Healdsburg, Sunday, September 19
About 100 observerswatch ed one of Sonoma County's ornithological wonders:
the roosting of about 10,000 Vaux's Swifts in a chimney at Rio Lindo Academy.
The birds began to assemble in the sky at 7:00 PM and started entering the
roost at 7:15. Within half an hour all had settled in for the night. Leader
Peter Leveque advises, if you've never observed this phenomenon, be sure
to attend next fall's field trip!
Bodega Harbor Area, Wednesday, October 6
Twenty-four birders braved early light drizzle and fog to join David Hofmann
and Dennis Beall on this Walkabout. The day improved and sixty-eight species
were seen, including eight Red Knots, a Merlin, and a Wandering Tattler. |
