Tool Time: Winter Work Day for the Birds, Sunday, February
28, 10 AM to 1 PM Bring your hammer, nails, ladder, and
other tools and join John Klobas and Jim Kirk for a morning of repair, reconstruction,
and renovation of the nest boxes Pee Wee has placed at Spring Lake over
the past few years. We will meet in the parking lot near the swim lagoon
and will plan to work for about three hours. Don't forget to bring your
lunch to enjoy after the work party. This will also be the opportunity for
families to pick up a nest box to build at home. We are not planning to
install any more boxes around Spring Lake until we can routinely maintain
ones already in place. To reserve a nest box, register early with Jim Kirk
(528-9701).
The Life of a Creek, Van Hoosear Wildflower Preserve, Saturday,
March 6 Under the guidance of the Sonoma Ecology Center,
we will explore the life of a Sonoma creek that is being restored to its
pre-cattle grazing condition. Looking at the animal and plant life in and
around it we will try to "think like a creek" and figure out why
a waterway takes the course it does and how it supports so much life. We
will observe the efforts of a fifth-grade class in Sonoma to help replace
the native trees that once grew here, and plant some willow shoots ourselves.
We'll meet at 1 PM and adjourn about 3. For directions and registration,
please call Carol at 938-2899. Expect wet, muddy conditions and dress accordingly.
Heavy rain cancels. If the weather looks iffy, call Carol again the morning
of the event to confirm. Space is limited.
Ahhh, Spring! Sunday, March 21, 10 AM to 1 PM The doldrums of winter are behind us as we celebrate the Vernal equinox
and the coming of spring. Join John Klobas and Jim Kirk for a walk around
Spring Lake to look for signs of nesting birds that are using Pee Wee boxes,
and other signs of spring in the animal world. This three-hour activity
is always popular for both kids and adults, so register early with Jim (528-9701). |
