Call for Volunteers Mayacamas Census Study ExpandedMadrone Audubon volunteers and staff of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory have reviewed the findings of our Mayacamas Mountain Sanctuary bird census study, and concluded that the study needs to be expanded. The follow-up study will begin next month, with slightly revised protocols and new census plots. The initial survey was completed a year ago, and provides a wealth of information on species found within the Sanctuary. However, according to Mayacamas Committee Chair Bill Payne, "The 12 original study plots omitted some significant habitat, so the resulting portrait of the Sanctuary is incomplete. Additionally, the possible construction of a pipeline through some sensitive habitat within the sanctuary makes it important that we get baseline census data on these areas, which weren't all included in our original study." Volunteers are needed to conduct a census in a dozen additional study plots, beginning in February or March. A team will be assigned to each plot, and will conduct its census once a month for the duration of the follow-up study, probably one year. In addition, four to six easily-accessible "point count locations" are being designated, where counts can be carried out without strenuous walking.
