Schoolhouse Flat
One of the regular stops when birding Audubon's Mayacamas Mountain
Sanctuary is Schoolhouse Flat. Robert Evans has provided the following clipping
describing the area's namesake.
From the Russian River Flag, October 15, 1874 "About two miles north of [the Hood Ranch], a new redwood schoolhouse
appears, perched up demurely alongside the Foss road. The presiding divinity
of this temple is Miss Ida Clayton, the young lady in whose honor the Ida
Clayton mine is named. Although there are 40 children in the Pine Flat District,
less than half that number attend." |
