Madrone Needs Your Support Contract on Mayacamas Restoration Planning Agreement on Hillside Ordinance |
General MeetingThe Headwaters Forest is the subject of our November general meeting. Ancient redwood forests are unique and complex ecosystems. In Headwaters one can find numerous endangered and threatened species such as Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet. As ninety-seven percent of all old-growth redwood forests have been logged, the importance of preserving the remaining islands of ancient trees has become critical. Four years ago nature photographer Doug Thron presented a fine program on the Headwaters Forest to Madrone Audubon. Since then much has transpired on local and national levels regarding the future of this magnificent stand of ancient trees and Doug has continued at the forefront in the effort to preserve the Headwaters Grove and other threatened groves in the Headwaters Forest. Recently, Doug has joined Joan Dunning, acclaimed author of Secret of the Nest and The Loon: Voice of the Wilderness, to produce a new book, From the Redwoods: Ancient Trees and the Bottom Line---A Headwaters Journey. This collaboration will be the basis for their presentation to Madrone's general meeting. This book uses Joan's words and Doug's photographs to tell the story behind the frontlines of an epic struggle waged in defense of the Endangered Species Act and the forest itself. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM, November 16, 1998, at the first Presbyterian Church, Ingram Hall, 1550 Pacific Avenue, Santa Rosa. As always, the public is welcome. |
