Fewer Ducks

The newsletter of the Wildlife Management Institute reports that there will be "slightly fewer" ducks migrating south this fall: 84 million, compared to 92 million last year. "Mallards, the continent's most abundant duck, will account for 11.7 million of the total. Last year, an estimated 14.4 million mallards made the trip."

Quoting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ducks Unlimited, WIF explains that due to a dry winter and a warm early spring on the prairies of the northcentral U.S. and southcentral Canada, where most ducks breed and nest, portions of the traditional breeding areas were dry this year. Some ducks overflew those areas and never attempted to breed. The situation was worse in prairie Canada than in the U.S. prairies.
