SCCC Recognizes Nature EducatorsTwo teachers who happen to be members of Madrone Audubon have been recognized with the Sonoma County Conservation Council's annual award for excellence in environmental education. The recipients are Kathy Angell, Madrone's Education chair, who teaches first grade at Mattie Washburn Elementary School in Windsor, and Mike Heffernan, who teaches grades 6 to 8 at Salmon Creek School in Occidental. Kathy was recognized for her leadership in establishing a nature education program on 1.3 acres of undeveloped property. She obtained a $30,000 grant from the State Department of Education for the project, and helped develop an environmental education curriculum and guide for teachers at grade levels 1-6. She also helps other teachers at all levels with implementation of the program. Kathy and two of her students accepted the award at SCCC's annual meeting in March. Mike's award is for the Salmon Creek School Natural History Project, which has generated a nature trail on the school's extensive campus, a bird list and virtual tour of the nature trail on the school's Web site, and an upcoming chemical and bacteriological study of the Creek, among many other projects. The selection of outstanding school environmental programs in the county is made each year by the previous year's winner of the SCCC Ernestine I. Smith Award for long-term service to the environmental community. It includes a $450 prize to each school. This year's selections were made by Leonard Swenson, who received the Award in 1997. |
