Pee Wee Audubon
Pee Wee Parents Stepping In Madrone Audubon's monthly
Pee Wee Audubon program has been so successful that we are now offering
two programs per month, to accommodate the many families that wish to participate.
The program is for children ages 4 to 12 and their families.
Chair Marilynn Scott wants to thank all the Pee Wee parents who have
come forward to help organize and manage this expanding program. For many
months, Elham Rafla-Yuan has been taking reservations and helping with every
event. Now, Carol Bojarski, Sabine Ramage, and Pam Kramer-Smith also are
organizing and managing monthly programs, and providing the publicity information
to the Leaves.
Pee Wee also thanks the many contributors to Madrone Audubon whose donations
have made it possible to pay naturalist stipends for the increased number
of field trips, and to purchase several new sets of binoculars and spotting
scopes.
Spring at the Van Hoosear Ranch, April 4 After
all the rain this spring, Pee Wee Audubon's walk at the Van Hoosear Wildflower
Preserve on Saturday, April 4, should be really spectacular. It could be
muddy, though, so rain boots are advised. Our leader for the day will be
Peter Warner, who will alert us to the remarkable developments going on
all around us in nature in the spring. The walk will begin at 10 AM; then
we will have a picnic, and plan to depart around 1 PM. Please call Elham
at 573-1782 for reservations. For further details or a last-minute weather
advisory, call Carol at 938-2899.
Directions: For directions, please see last month's newsletter, or call
Elham or Carol.
"Day at the Beach," April 26 Sunday,
April 26 should be a great day for a Pee Wee outing on the Sonoma coast.
As our leader, we are fortunate to have Ginger Parish, who also does trips
for the Academy of Sciences and the Oceanic Society. We'll explore Goat
Rock State Beach, learn about the creatures that live there, enjoy beach
activities, and walk to view the harbor seals at the mouth of the Russian
River. The program will begin at 10:30 AM and end around 2 PM. Dress warmly,
with a wind-breaking outer layer. Bring lunch, a snack, liquids, and binoculars
if you have them. This program was rescheduled from November 16, when it
rained.
Reservations are limited, so to be sure of attending, phone Elham as
soon as possible at 573-7183. She will tell you where to meet the group.
Directions: Take Highway 12 west to Sebastopol. Go right on Highway 116
toward Jenner. Go through Forestville, Guerneville, and Duncans Mills, then
left (south) on Highway 1 about 1 mile. Turn right to Goat Rock State Beach.
Stream Study: Santa Rosa Creek, May 3 On Sunday,
May 3, we will explore Santa Rosa Creek with naturalist Cathleen Cannon.
She will help us get to know the creek, its interesting insects, plants,
and animals, and its many surprises. Wear shoes and socks that can get wet
and muddy, bring a lunch and water, and be prepared for a picnic on the
rocks. Limit of 15 children. For reservations and directions, call Sabine
at 542-7303.
Mark your calendar Pee Wee families, be sure to
hold the date of Sunday, May 17, for a trip to the heron and egret rookery
at Audubon Canyon Ranch in Marin. A docent will be meeting us at 10:45 AM.
We will visit the nesting grove and enjoy the ranch until 1:15 PM. For reservations
and further information, please call Sabine at 542-7303. |
