Birders Cruise the Bay

Bay Area Christmas Bird Counters were invited to sail San Francisco Bay in January, as guests of the San Francisco Bay Oceanic Crew Group. At least seven Madrone members joined the sail, which was held on January 17. Numerous 30- to 40-foot sailboats carrying Audubon birders departed from Marinas all over the Bay. According to former Madrone Treasurer David Biggs, it was a lovely, calm day, with just enough wind for sailing. His hosts, David and Linda Haines of Sebastopol, sailed out of San Rafael, across the Bay, and under the Bridge. Then they tied their 34-foot Westsail up with four other boats at Corte Madera for a delightful picnic lunch. As for birds, lots and lots of Surf Scoters and gulls.

The Oceanic Crew Group is a volunteer activity of sailors who enjoy taking volunteers with various interests out on the Bay. Dave says it was a great experience.

The announcement of the sail was made at the Christmas Bird Count dinner. If you missed it, try counting next year; you never know what will turn up!
