January 22, 1998 Faced with an inaccurate forecast
of rain, eight birders met on a warm, clear day to bird the earthquake trail
and Limantour with Lew Edmondson, tallying 59 species. The highlight of
the day was having a Cooper's Hawk make three unsuccessful passes
at a covey of quail in the picnic grounds across from the Bear Valley Visitor
Center. In frustration, it perched on a downed log to rest where all could
observe it up close and personal. As usual, seven fallow deer occupied the
hill on the south side of the Morgan Horse stable.
January 28, 1998 Approximately 15 birders gathered
in Bodega Bay on an overcast but rainless Wednesday for a trip that included
the Rail Ponds, Bodega Head, Campbell Cove and Doran Park. A Peregrine
Falcon was seen near the Rail Ponds and by the time the rest of the
group had reached the Head, David Hofmann already had the Rock Sandpiper
in his scope. These were the highlighted birds out of the total 73 species
seen that morning. |
