Volunteer Opportunities
Teenage Birders for Third Street Study As the City
of Santa Rosa prepares to convert the Third Street wastewater ponds into
an 82-acre sports complex, Madrone Audubon wants to monitor the status of
bird life in the area, before, during, and after. The project provides for
restoration work along the adjacent creek, and creation of a treated wastewater
lake to replace some of the lost bird habitat. Project leader Claire Shurvinton
hopes to find out which species are most affected by the project and how
well the City's wildlife preservation plans actually work. She is looking
for birders aged 12 and over, to help with a periodic bird census of the
area. The first census will probably be December 20. To volunteer, please
call Claire at 527-6118. (See also 'Place to Play'
Gets Go-ahead.)
Be a Birder Feeder! A few more hands are needed
to help with the Christmas Bird Count dinner in Sebastopol the evening of
December 28. To volunteer, please call Peter Leveque at 707-542-8946. (Also,
see 1997 Christmas Bird Count.)
Used Redwood Madrone Audubon's volunteer carpentry
crew has orders for dozens of nest boxes. Unfortunately, they're running
short of "nesting material". What's needed are unpainted redwood
boards, especially those with usable pieces at least three feet long. (That's
for about 30 wood duck boxes.) Donations of salvage from an old fence or
barn, or leftover lumber you'll never use, will be put to good use. If you
can help, please call Peter Leveque at the number above. |
