'Place to Play' Gets Go-ahead 1997 Christmas Bird Count Through the Garden Gate: Backyard Birding |
1997 Christmas Bird Countby Ken Wilson Sunday, December 28 is the date for Madrone Audubon's 31st Annual Christmas Bird Count. Our count circle, as always, is in western Sonoma County (see map). Count teams are in the field from early morning until about 4 PM, when we retire to Sebastopol for a potluck, tale telling, and a count tally. The potluck will be at the Sebastopol Community Center, 390 Morris Street. We count regardless of the weather. Last year, despite a full-scale storm, more than 100 brave souls located 48,111 birds of 169 species. This placed us at number 21 out of 1650 circles in the North American count--not bad, under the circumstances. Counters and helpers may arrive at the Sebastopol Community Center any time after 4:30 PM; the potluck is served at 6:30. Coffee, tea, cocoa and cups will be provided. Please bring your own plate, utensils, and a supper dish for six. As requested by National Audubon, each team leader collects a fee of $5 per counter. The count is a highlight of the year for many of us, and the potluck is always superb. Volunteers are needed for both the count and the potluck, and first-time counters are welcome. To sign up or for more information, call Ken Wilson at 823-8408, or Russ Agnew at 823-7555.
