Beginners Bird Walks
Saturday, May 17, 1997 Seventeen birders had great
nesting observations at Annadel State Park and Channel Drive. We saw nest
material collected by a Junco. A Solitary Vireo chased a Steller's
Jay from its territory while a male Black-headed Grosbeak responded
repeatedly to the feeding needs of a young bird. Everybody had great looks
through the scopes at a singing Olive-sided Flycatcher. Twenty-one
species were observed.
Saturday, June 7, 1997 Sixty-one species were observed
along Pine Flat Road by 17 birders. We were joined by Jesse Grantham, Assistant
Director of National Audubon Sanctuaries. Purple Martins were in
the vicinity of a large snag, perhaps they'll nest next year. Neal Conner
found a nesting Yellow-rumped Warbler, this may be a first for this
area. Golden Eagles put in an appearance, as did Lazuli Buntings,
Western Tanagers, Ash-throated Flycatchers and California Thrashers.
Saturday, June 21, 1997 Salmon Creek Road produced
good looks at five species of flycatchers and four species of swallows.
The flycatchers including Ash-throated, Western Kingbird, Black Phoebe,
Pacific Slope and Western Wood-Peewee. The swallows watched were
Barn, Cliff, Northern Rough-winged and Violet-green. Thirteen
people saw 47 species.
Saturday, July 19, 1997 Thirteen people watched
26 species at Crane Creek Regional Park. We found a sub adult Peregrine
sitting attentatively watching an altercation between a Red-tailed Hawk
and several Kestrels. Two Red-tailed Hawks responded to the
demanding calls of an immature offspring. Thirty or more Turkey Vultures
put on a soaring display and a Golden Eagle passed close overhead.
Saturday, August 2, 1997 Ragel Ranch provided 17
people with sightings of 41 species, including the following fledglings:
Mockingbird, American Robin, House Finch, Western Bluebird and Black-headed
Grosbeak. A Great Blue Heron and Green Heron graced the
sky along with hovering Kites. A low flying flock of Vaux's Swifts
ended another wonderful day's birding. |
