Volunteer Opportunities: Mayacamas Sanctuaryby Bill Payne Mayacamas Work Group. A Madrone Audubon working committee is being formed to coordinate our activities and policies on the Mayacamas Mountains Sanctuary. Some areas to be dealt with are maintenance and physical improvements, educational development, maps and signage, census report and checklist (see below), and coordination with National Audubon, as well as conservation issues (see page one). According to Jesse Grantham, Director of Western Sanctuaries for the National Audubon Society, NAS would be pleased to have Madrone take as much responsibility as possible for the preserve. Our Board agrees that, while NAS holds title to the property, much of its benefit accrues to the Chapter and we may be in the best position to eventually exercise day-to-day stewardship of the land. All who wish to participate in the working committee or in any aspect of the Sanctuary please contact Bill Payne at 546-3331, or Peter Leveque at 542-8946. Observations. After more than 18 months, data collection for the Mayacamas Sanctuary bird census is nearing completion. One of the first products of this study will be a checklist of birds found on the property. To make the checklist as comprehensive as possible, we would also like to have reports of other recent or past observations on the Sanctuary property, especially those involving nesting activity. Anyone with information to report, please call Bill at the number above, or drop him a line at 136 California Avenue, Santa Rosa, California 95405. Data Processing and Report. With most of the bird census data now in hand, we've lost our student intern and most of the data entry still remains to be done. The Point Reyes Bird Observatory has helped with the methodology and will assist in the processing and interpretation, but we need a member with a PC and basic computer skills to get the database in shape. This is an excellent opportunity to work with some of the leading ornithological researchers on the West Coast. Interested? Call Bill! |
