Field Trip Reports
May 24, 1997, Pine Flat Road Eleven birders joined
Ian Morrison for the May Field Trip to Pine Flat Road. The weather was calm,
beautiful and fresh due to the previous day's rain. Fifty-eight species
were found starting with a Green-backed Heron at the Sausal Creek
bridge and ending with a scolding Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at the end
of the road. In between excellent views were had of Lazuli Buntings,
Western Tanagers, Black-headed Grosbeaks, California Thrashers, Rufous-crowned
Sparrows and a Pileated Woodpecker. Other birds found were young
Warbling Vireos, a Grasshopper Sparrow and several Vaux's
Swifts.
September 13, 1997, Bodega Bay Perfect birding
weather greeted the 16 participants during this morning trip, during which
66 species were sighted. Many were beginning birders, so a lot of attention
was paid to and, hopefully, questions answered about birding basics, e.g.
"winter" plumage, juvenile vs. adult, field guides and field techniques.
The opportunity to discuss a Purple Finch that was spotted by Kristin
as differentiated from a House Finch was welcome. |
