Beginning Bird Walks
Saturday, April 19, 1997 We visited Alpha Pond,
a City of Santa Rosa wastewater treatment pond. Led by Caroline Dixon, we
worked our way out into the Laguna de Santa Rosa to watch the activities
of a breeding colony of Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets and Double-crested
Cormorants. Other birds of note were Bullock's Orioles and Common
Yellowthroats. Twelve people saw a total of 12 species.
Saturday, May 3, 1997 Twenty-five people walked
the varied habitat of Fairfield Osborn Preserve on the slopes of Sonoma
Mountain and saw a total of 24 species. Lazuli Buntings seemed abundant
this year and their song, mixed with that of Black-headed Grosbeak, was
frequently punctuated by the calls of a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers.
An Allen's Hummingbird feeding on native columbine (Aquilegia
formosa) was worth the trip. The activites of breeding Red-shouldered
Blackbirds kept us entertained for some time. |
