Midweek Walkabout Results

About 25 members of Madrone Audubon enjoyed a beautiful spring walk on the Pine Flat Mayacamas Preserve. Wildflowers were in abundance with the St. Helena Fawn Lily, Erythronium helenae, being the prize wildflower of the day. This species of Fawn Lily is restricted to serpentine-derived soils and is especially abundant at several localities on the preserve. The group walked for a short distance along the old Clark Foss Stage Road which connected the cities of Pine Flat and Healdsburg.

Sixteen birders, including two from Nova Scotia and one from St. Joseph, Missouri, searched the Duncans Mills, Jenner and Bridgehaven areas for returning neotropicals and tallied 64 species. The weather was sunny and warm except along the coast where summer-pattern fog persisted. A flock of about 40 Golden-crowned Sparrows gathered in the pasture next to the old Duncans Mills schoolhouse preparing for their move to their mountain nesting grounds. Highlights included Caspian Terns and nesting Osprey along the river.

On an overcast, lightly drizzling day, 15 birders visited the Warm Springs Dam area and found 62 species of birds. Notable birds of the day were Lazuli Buntings, Ash-throated Flycatchers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Chipping Sparrows, Lark Sparrows, Rufous-crowned Sparrows, California Thrasher, Western Tanager, Black-throated Gray Warbler, and five species of Swallows.

On a warm sunny day, 29 birders attended the bird walk at Salmon Creek Road. Outstanding birds were Golden Eagle, Swainson's Thrush, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Chipping Sparrow. After lunch, part of the group took a side trip to Bodega Bay to view the following birds nesting at the Head: Pigeon Guillemot, Pelagic Cormorant, Black Oystercatcher, and Western Gull. Total species for the day was 89.
