Pee Wee Explores Point Reyes

by Marilyn Scott

Pee Wee Audubon will meet near the Bear Valley Visitor Center of Point Reyes National Seashore on Saturday, May 17, at 10 AM. Teacher/naturalist Jim Kirk will hike with us along the Earthquake Trail as we scout for birds, mammals and other wildlife. We'll investigate tracks, examine the local plants and play games along the trail. Then, after we look at the Visitor Center and have lunch, we will walk to Kule Loklo, a replica of a Miwok Indian Village, built with traditional methods and tools. We will learn about the life of the Miwok and how their style of living harmonized with nature. There will be stories, games and craft activities. Children and adults alike will delight in Jim's entertaining ways of sharing his knowledge. The program will end at 2 PM.

Pee Wee Audubon is sponsored by the Madrone Audubon Society, for children aged 4 through 12 and their families. There is no fee for participation, but reservations are required. Please call Elham at 573-7183.

Directions: Allow about an hour and a quarter from Santa Rosa. Take Highway 101 to the Washington Street exit in Petaluma. Turn right (west) on Washington, then left on Lakeville and right on D Street. As it leaves Petaluma, D becomes Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. Follow it all the way past Nicasio Reservoir. At the bottom of the hill, below the dam, there is a stop sign. Continue straight onto Platform Bridge Road; do not turn right toward Point Reyes Station. At Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, turn right. At the Olema Inn, turn right again onto Highway 1, then left onto Bear Valley Road. Follow the signs for the Visitor Center. Drive all the way in, past the Visitor Center, and look for us at the left side of the back parking lot.

Important: Please note that Pee Wee's last outing of the year will be on Sunday, June 8 at Bodega Bay: an exploration of the mudflats of Spuds Point Marina with the delightful master educator Peter Leveque. We'll meet at 8:30 AM to take advantage of the low tide, and conclude with lunch around noon. Full details in next month's Leaves.
