Mayacamas Update

Bill Payne, Chairman of our Mayacamas Preserve Bird Census project, reports that the census is progressing well. The six study teams now have monitored their census plots for a full year, and data collection will continue at least through the breeding season. Santa Rosa Junior College student Bridget Voth has computerized the data collected to date, and a preliminary statistical report is expected soon.

Madrone's commitment to the Preserve, which is located on Pine Flat Road near Healdsburg, brings with it many opportunities, such as the census project and our spring and fall Chapter campouts. It also entails some responsibilities, such as cleanup of the illegal dumping that occasionally occurs on the property.

Bill wants to thank all who have helped with this chore, especially Rich Ryan, a neighbor of the Preserve who is a building contractor. Rich responded to a recent dumping incident literally over night, detailing one of his crews to remove a garbage deposit and donating a substantial portion of the cost. Thanks too to the many donors to our annual campaign and Birdathon, whose support helps fund these necessary maintenance expenses.
