Audubon in the ClassroomMaking the Audubon Adventures classroom enrichment program even more effective was the purpose of a half-day teachers' workshop sponsored by Madrone Audubon and the County Office of Education, March 14. The workshop was offered during the schools' county-wide inservice training day, and attracted a full house of 60 interested elementary school teachers. Thanks to the many donors who supported Madrone's education and conservation programs this year, each teacher who participated will receive the Audubon Adventures package free for his or her classroom next fall. The workshops were organized by Bob Evans, a 32-year teacher who is now Audubon Adventures Chairman, and taught by David Berman, who is also an environmental educator and classroom teacher. The Sonoma County Office of Education reportedly wants the successful workshop to be repeated in future years. Audubon Adventures is produced by the National Audubon Society and organized locally to reach students and teachers in neighborhood schools. For only $35 per class, it provides a series of six illustrated newspapers of natural sciences information and projects for each child, plus a teacher's guide and posters Seventy Sonoma County teachers already have requested Audubon Adventures for the 1997-98 school year, and Bob hopes to double that number by the time classes begin. You can adopt a classroom by sending a check for $35 made out to Madrone Audubon Society, specifying that you want it used for Audubon Adventures. If you want to identify a specific classroom for your donation, please note the teacher's name, school and school address. Send to Robert Evans, 1065 St. Helena Way, Sebastopol, California 95472, or call (707) 823-0609 for more information. |
