MidWeek Walkabout Results Wednesday, February 19, 1997 On a cloudy, windyand very cool day, 23 birders left rain in Santa Rosa to go to Grizzly Islandand Susun Marsh. We had two birders from Long Beach, California, with us.Many of the ducks had left for the north, but we did get 63 species, withAmerican Bittern and Virginia Rail being life birds for some. Thursday, February 27, 1997 Bill Payne was joinedby ten birders on a cool, clear but extremely windy day at Point Reyes NationalSeashore. Among the 64 bird species observed were Ring-necked Duck, CinnamonTeal, Great Horned Owl, Peregrine Falcon, Allen's Hummingbird, Golden-crownedKinglet and Townsend's Warbler. The highlight of the day wasan unexpected visit by a beautiful Gray Fox during our lunch break at Drake'sBeach. This nearly tame individual lounged within a few feet of our groupand seemed to be content to share our sunny spot out of the wind. Wednesday, March 5, 1997 Twenty-one birders enjoyeda beautiful day at Bodega Bay observing 77 species. Notable were the AncientMurrelet, Sora, Glaucous-winged Gulls and the still present EmporerGoose. The surprise of the trip was the spotting of a Glaucous Gullon the beach at Campbell Cove during our lunch break. Laurence Taylor reportedthis to the RBA and Dan Nelson. Interestingly, few birds of prey were spotteduntil late in the day, and no Avocets were seen at the pond at theentrance to Doran Park. |
