Does the Mandarin Duck Count? | Mayacamas Camp-out A rare and lovely place, great people, good food, and top-notch birdingare on the schedule for Madrone's Spring camp-out at the Mayacamas Sanctuary.The preserve is normally closed to overnight use, so this semi-annual Madroneevent is your best opportunity to experience its precious evening, night,and early morning sights and sounds. We arrive between 4 and 7 PM Friday, and convene for a potluck dinnerat 6:30. Please bring a supper dish to share, your own eating utensils,plates, and beverages, your breakfast, plenty of water, and camping gear.Madrone Audubon provides porta-potties and some cook stoves. We'll have owling at night, and those who wish can participate in a birdcensus on some of our study parcels on Saturday or explore on your own. Advance reservations are required, along with a $5 per person fee tohelp cover the cost of the porta-potties. To reach the Sanctuary, exit Highway 101 at Dry Creek going east. Atthe second light, turn left onto Healdsburg Avenue. At the Y, bear rightonto Alexander Valley Road. You will cross the Russian River. The road brieflybecomes Highway 128 and passes through Jimtown. Where 128 bears right, youcontinue straight onto Pine Flat Road. From this point, it is exactly ninemiles to the campsite. Proceed onward and upward, and watch for MAS signs.The road is one-lane and winding, with steep drop-offs in some places. Drivecarefully, and please carpool if possible. |
