Beginners Bird Walks

Saturday, February 15, 1997
Twenty-five birdersspent the morning touring Brown Farm, a City of Santa Rosa waste-water treatmentpond and the nearby Laguna. We were provided entry and subsequently guidedthroughout the walk by Biologist Carolyn Dixon. On the pond, 35 AmericanPelicans fed actively before dispersing into the air in a display whichheld everyone's attention. Amongst the birds on the pond were AmericanAvocet and Black-necked Stilt. A Common Yellowthroat closeby was nice to see. Further down the Lagoon, among a mixed group of ducksand egrets, several Hooded Mergansers were a wonderful addition tothe morning. A female Merlin entertained us all with a display ofher flying abilities as she sent several ducks into panic. We ended themorning with a brief flyby by an American Bittern. We saw a totalof 46 species.

Four birders joined JohnFerrari and Bill Payne on a clear, cool morning for a leisurely walk atSpring Lake County Park. We were rewarded with very good views of Ring-neckedDuck, Common Goldeneye, Common Moorhen and a singing Bewick's Wren. The highlight of the morning was a very close-range and dramatic view ofan adult Red-shouldered Hawk catching and devouring (head first)a garter snake.
