Russian River Flood Dynamics

Russian River Flood Dynamics

Local experts and activists are convening Saturday, April 26, for anall-day conference focused on the issues of recurrent flooding along theRussian River. Speakers and panelists will focus on the fundamentals ofriver dynamics during storm events and the human decisions that can exacerbateor mitigate flood damage. "Let's look at managing flood waters, notcontrolling rivers," says conference sponsor Marty Griffin. The RussianRiver has the highest rate of repetitive flooding of any river in the nation. The conference--Russian River Flood Challenge: Upriver Causes of DownriverFlooding--will take place in Guerneville at the Veterans Memorial Building.Cost is $15 per person, and includes a box lunch. Urban development, agriculture, gravel mining, tributary flows, drinking water--all these issues will bedealt with. The Saturday conference will be followed by a series of fourWednesday morning seminars and field trips. This series can be signed upfor separately. Sign-up for the seminars is limited to 30 conference participants.Cost is an additional $50, which includes materials. Classes meet from 9:00to noon at various locations. The seminars and field trips are designedto give participants a personal introduction to the river habitat and achance to explore the public policy aspects of drinking water managementand watershed planning. Students will hike a tributary, explore the riparianforest, visit the water agency pumping station, and talk with decision makers. Both the conference and the classes are sponsored by the Sonoma County ConservationCouncil environmental forum.
