Fall Campout

by Peter Leveque

Twenty-three members of the Chapter participated in the first fall campout atthe Audubon Mayacamas Preserve on Pine Flat Road. An excellent potluck dinnerwas followed by star gazing and an owling walk led by Roger Marlowe. ScreechOwls were most cooperative and were heard throughout the night with a finalsalvo ending at 6:45 AM above our campsite. We were treated to the barking andhowling of coyotes midway through the night.

A spectacularly clear and bright sky provided our resident astronomer, JohnLundblad the opportunity to help us identify many of the fall constellations. All astronomers/owlers were treated to fine views of Jupiter and its fourGalilean moons.

Following breakfast most folks went on one of several bird censuses which arebeing conducted monthly by Chapter volunteers.

If you would be interested in participating in the spring campout, consult yourMarch 1997 issue of the Leaves for details.
