Midweek Walkabout Report

September 18, 1996, Pt. Reyes
Talk about a "birdy" day! The birds were everywhere on this clearfall day. In all, 81 species were observed. Most individuals were multiplecopies of the regular fall migrants but many were year-round and winterresidents. In addition, a small band of hardy birders studying gulls onDrake's Beach was able to identify an unexpected Common Tern practicingtouch-down landings. After lunch four rare Pectoral Sandpipers werefound on the Mendoza Ranch pond. Other unusual sightings included both speciesof the former Lesser Golden Plover, fulva and dominica, onthe Spaletta Ranch plateau. Thirty eager birders attended, including twomigrants gradually extending their home range to Sonoma County from LongBeach (welcome, Linda Allen and Carole Sunlight) and one first county sighting,Joanne Woodal, from Aurora, Ohio.

Wednesday, September 25, 1996
Nine hardy birders met at Hawk Hill on a cold overcast day. While there,we observed a rare orchid--the white form of Epipactis helleborine(forma monotropoides). After two hours of bad weather we left for the RodeoLagoon. A total of 41 species were seen or heard. Among them was a EurasianWigeon, Red-breasted Nuthatch and a flying Merlin. The best sightingof the day was a close-up view of a pair of Pectoral Sandpipers.

Wednesday, October 2, 1996
Twenty-three birders found 95 species at Bodega Bay and Doran Park. Notablewere more than four dozen Snowy Plovers at Doran Beach and the rareTri-colored Heron.
