| | MAS Seeks Info on Local Kite Roosts White-tailed Kites are known to roost communally in fall and winterin Sonoma County. We are seeking cooperation from our members and localcommunity in identifying these roost sites in order to expand our knowledgeand data base on this important bird.
Concentrations of them have been found in recent winters near Rohnert ParkHewlett-Packard (the same general area where 237 of these birds were observedby G. Bolander, J. Arnold, and M. Parmeter in 1969) and also at Willow Creeknear the mouth of the Russian River. Numbers of these birds flying north-westare consistently seen at dusk late in December over the intersection ofMarlowe Road and Guerneville Road in Santa Rosa. Where are they going? Thereare undoubtedly other roost sites we have not located. Please help us byrecording these roosts by noting the number of birds, types of trees orbushes used, and extreme dates of these observations (e.g. Nov. 15 to Feb.1).Please alert us by phone to these roosts (Betty Burridge 527-0225) whenyou first see them, and follow up with the written information when theroost dissipates.
