The Sound and the Furry

Map to BouverieMadrone Audubon Society is very pleased to welcome Dr. Bernie Krause, aninternationally known specialist in wildlife sound recording, as the speakerfor our October General Meeting. Dr. Krause will provide insight into thesymbiotic ways in which the sounds of one organism--avian ormammal--affect and inter-relate with all other organisms locally andregionally. New insights into cultural themes derived from the roles naturalsounds play in human life will be offered.

For the past quarter century, Dr. Krause has traveled the world over capturingthe sounds of creatures and environments large and small. A naturalist andeco-tour leader, he has worked at the research sites of Jane Goodall (Gombe,Tansania), Birute Galdikis (Camp Leakey, Borneo) and Dian Fosse (Karisoke,Rwanda), recording and evaluating the effects of ambient sound on thevocalizations of the great apes. He was also Scientific Director of theoperation that rescued Humphrey the Humpback Whale from the Sacramento Delta in1985 using processed feeding sounds of the same species to lure him to theocean. Aside from his work in Bio-acoustics, Dr. Krause also has a backgroundin music, having contributed to over 135 major feature films. Throughenvironmental record albums and created interactive environmental soundsculptures for museums, zoos, aquaria and other public spaces.
