On June 11th the California Coastal Commission (CCC) will be voting on a Cease and Desist order directing the Gualala Festivals Committee (GFC) from undertaking or threatening to undertake a fireworks display without applying for a Coastal Development Permit. More information is available in the lead article of the May newsletter about the fireworks disturbing a nesting colony of Brandt's Cormorants, resulting in nests failing. A full report of the study which Madrone and Mendocino Audubon members participated in is on the Bureau of Land Management website. Go to http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/prog/blm_special_areas/ccnm/contents.html#articles and at the bottom of the page under Articles of Interest, you will find the link to the pdf document. First, if you can attend the June 11th meeting that would be extremely helpful. It will be in Santa Rosa at the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors' Chambers at 575 Administration Drive beginning at 10:00 a.m. We would want to assemble no later than 9:30 a.m. Several of us will be speaking. If you want to speak, let me know, as we don't want to repeat ourselves. We need to have many concerned residents there supporting the CCC's action on our behalf. Please let me know if you can attend....we may want supporters to sign in to speak or sign your minutes over... If you can't attend, please consider writing a letter of support. In the top right hand corner, put "In support of Item 13 of the June 11th agenda." We want to thank them for taking action, especially when other agencies were unwilling. Mention you care for our wildlife and are concerned about the effects of the night time explosions on the nesting seabirds on Gualala Point Island in northwest Sonoma County. You might want to mention the effects on the unspoiled estuary of the Gualala River and the inappropriateness of fireworks in this locale. But, especially, thank them for hearing us, for being willing to take action, for helping us to protect our wildlife. California Coastal Commission After the Coastal Commission meeting you can also help with the monitoring! There's an inset in the newsletter and you can call me for more info: Diane Hichwa |
